Bali,
1 July 2013 – Nusa Dua Beach Hotel & Spa released 70 baby turtles from the
hatchery to the Indian Ocean on Sunday, 30 June 2013. The resort management
invited the guests, representatives of the Bali Sea Turtle Society to co
ordinate the turtle release, with over 300 guests, employees and local people
joining the activity held on the famous white sandy beach of Nusa Dua on what
was a beautiful sunny afternoon.
This
birth of the turtles had been much anticipated since the mother of this Olive
Ridley turtle species (Lepidochelys olivacea) laid her eggs in the sand 53 days
before. Finding the mother turtle laying eggs there on the 7 May 2013, the
resort management set up a border to mark and protect the original Turtle nest
from any disturbances. The environmental team from the Nusa Dua Beach Hotel
& Spa monitored the nest daily, allowing the eggs hatch and incubate
naturally. The babies then spent one night in a seawater pool inside the resort
to allow visitors to view them and learn more about the turtles, before they
were released into the ocean the next day.
Olive
Ridley is a medium-sized of sea turtle found in warm and tropical waters,
primarily in the Pacific and Indian Oceans. The adult carapace length averaging
60 to 70cm. This is not the first time that the sea turtle has laid eggs on the
beach area in front of the resort. In June 2012, 110 babies were released from
the same location. Currently there are still two more nests that are being
monitored daily by the resort’s environmental team and it is estimated that
they will hatch in the next three weeks.
The
management of Nusa Dua Beach Hotel & Spa said the resorts environmental team
are committed to providing full support to a wide variety of conservation
activities. “Having the mother turtles laying eggs here is like a gift from
nature. We hope that the baby turtles will be able to survive in the ocean and come
back to this beach to lay their eggs in the future,” said Urs Klee, General
Manager of the resort.
